This chapter deals with life in deserts with special reference to The Sahara desert and Ladakh. Deserts are characterized by extreme temperatures, less than 25cm rainfall annually, and scanty vegetation. The Sahara covers a large part of North Africa from the Atlantic ocean in the west to the Red Sea in the east. It is spread across 11 countries. Al-Azizia, Libya recorded the highest temperature of 57.7 in 1922. The Bedouins and Tuaregs are the important nomadic tribes of this region. Ladakh is a cold desert located in the eastern part of Jammu and Kashmir. On 31 October 2019, Ladakh became a state. It is surrounded by the Karakoram range in the north and the Zaskar range in the south. The altitude of Ladakh varies from about 3000m in Kargil to about 8000m in the Karakoram range. Pashmina from the goats is the main source of income. The Government is making efforts to improve the economy and lifestyle of the people.
