In this, we will study about two temperate grasslands, the Prairie of North America and the Veld of South Africa. The Prairie is found both in the USA and Canada. This gently sloping hilly land stretches from the west of the Mississippi River to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Its N-S extent is about 6000km, while the E-W extent is 2000km. The Prairie is mainly drained by the Saskatchewan river in Canada and by the Mississippi River in the USA. The region experiences a continental type of climate i.e. warm summers and fairly cold winters. The Chinook blows down the eastern slopes of the Rockies. The average annual rainfall s about 50cm and it falls mostly during the summer season. Grasses are the most dominant vegetation. The Velds on the other hand are the temperate grasslands of South Africa. This region experiences a mild climate. The soil is not fertile, thus it is more suitable for cattle rearing than for the cultivation of crops. The main cultivated crops are maize, wheat, barley, oats, tobacco, sugarcane, cotton, and potatoes. Sheep rearing is the main occupation here.
